4th of July in NYC

The 4th of July is one of the most renowned national holidays in the US. Also known as independence day, it’s a holiday to commemorate US independence from Britain. According to Parade.com, on 2nd July 1776, the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Britain. This was officially implemented two days later, marked by the ringing of the Liberty Bell situated in the Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Macy’s Independence Day Fireworks

If you’re in New York City on the 4th of July and are looking for a family event in the city, it doesn’t get better than watching Macy’s Independence Day fireworks. The renowned department store Macy’s sponsors a spectacular fireworks display to illuminate New York’s skyline every year. In fact, this is the biggest fireworks display on Independence Day in the US, with over 60,000 fireworks shells used.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

Another family event in the city of New York on independence day is Nathan’s hotdog eating contest in Coney Island. This event takes place at noon on the 4th of July, where the world’s best competitive eaters compete in one of the world’s most renowned eating contests.

Officially approved by the IFCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating), Nathan’s hotdog eating contest is watched by thousands of people live and millions on TV. The event’s current record is 76 hot dogs in ten minutes.

Take a Cruise

Another great way to celebrate Independence day in New York is taking a cruise. Take the night cruise if you don’t want to encounter crowded streets. It offers you food, drinks, impeccable views of NYC’s skyline, and unobstructed views of the fireworks around the city.

Executive cruises on the 4th of July don’t come cheap and can go as high as $500. Still, several low-cost options allow children, such as Brooklyn IV, Capital Princess, Circle Line, Nautical Princess, New York Water Taxi, and the American Princess.
